Vin Checks

The Scituate Police Department is now going to resume conducting VIN Checks at the Station starting September 1, 2021!

Vehicles being transferred into, and registered in, Rhode Island from another state are required to visit a municipal police department for VIN checks beginning Sept. 1, 2021

VIN checks, as they are commonly known, are a requirement of new registration applications for vehicles being transferred into, and registered in, Rhode Island.  A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check is required before registering a vehicle if the title is from another state or the vehicle was registered in another state, and the model year of the vehicle is 2001 or newer. Applicants should bring the original title, or a copy of the title if there is a lien on the vehicle, along with the vehicle to a municipal police department for this service.
